Quote #1:
Found on page 125, "When Eddie was a teenager, if he ever complained or seemed bored with the pier, his father would snap." This quote shows the significance of what kind of person Eddie's father was. This is important to the story because while Eddie is in heaven he learns more about his father than he ever knew. He can't just base his father off of these reactions, but off of the new things he learns about him. Quote #2: Found on page 21, "Every hurt he'd ever suffered, every ache he'd endured - it was all gone as an expired breath." In the beginning of the story it is mentioned that he has many pains as he is an older man. This scene shows that as he is making his trip to heaven, all of it seems to just melt away. Quote #3: Found on page 49, "Instantly, Eddie felt everything the Blue Man had felt in his life rushing into him, swimming in his body, the loneliness, the shame, the nervousness, the heart attack. It slid into Eddie like a drawer being closed." This figurative language statement shows that everyhting that the Blue Man had felt, Eddie now felt too. It was a part of the lesson he was learning in heaven. Quote #4: Found on page 106, "Through it all, despite it all, Eddie privately adored his old man, because sons will adore their fathers through even the worst behavior." I find this quote significant because it shows that the relationship between a son and father is usually quite valued. Though Eddie's father was never the perfect example of a human being, Eddie still looked up to and admired him. Quote #5: Found on page 188, "The darkness that had shadowed him all those years was revealing itself at last, it was real, flesh and blood, this child, this lovely chiled, he had killed her, burned her to death, the bad dreams he'd suffered, he'd deserved every one." This was a very important quote because Eddie knew that when he set that area on fire something was in there, and now he knows that his instincts were correct. He is feeling it now, knowing that he had killed her which is a very important aspect of the story.
