Quote #1:
Found on page 125, "When Eddie was a teenager, if he ever complained or seemed bored with the pier, his father would snap." This quote shows the significance of what kind of person Eddie's father was. This is important to the story because while Eddie is in heaven he learns more about his father than he ever knew. He can't just base his father off of these reactions, but off of the new things he learns about him. Quote #2: Found on page 21, "Every hurt he'd ever suffered, every ache he'd endured - it was all gone as an expired breath." In the beginning of the story it is mentioned that he has many pains as he is an older man. This scene shows that as he is making his trip to heaven, all of it seems to just melt away. Quote #3: Found on page 49, "Instantly, Eddie felt everything the Blue Man had felt in his life rushing into him, swimming in his body, the loneliness, the shame, the nervousness, the heart attack. It slid into Eddie like a drawer being closed." This figurative language statement shows that everyhting that the Blue Man had felt, Eddie now felt too. It was a part of the lesson he was learning in heaven. Quote #4: Found on page 106, "Through it all, despite it all, Eddie privately adored his old man, because sons will adore their fathers through even the worst behavior." I find this quote significant because it shows that the relationship between a son and father is usually quite valued. Though Eddie's father was never the perfect example of a human being, Eddie still looked up to and admired him. Quote #5: Found on page 188, "The darkness that had shadowed him all those years was revealing itself at last, it was real, flesh and blood, this child, this lovely chiled, he had killed her, burned her to death, the bad dreams he'd suffered, he'd deserved every one." This was a very important quote because Eddie knew that when he set that area on fire something was in there, and now he knows that his instincts were correct. He is feeling it now, knowing that he had killed her which is a very important aspect of the story.

A Person Who Has Helped Me
During August of the year 2021 I had been hearing some terrible knews about my uncle who had been getting even more sick and the days went on. I would struggle during the day and no one would know why. One day my summer camp counselour of five years knew something was wrong. He would help me through each day of my sadness and not leave my side until he knew I was alright. Some days he would just let my feeling pour out and other days he talked me through it and how it was going to be alright. I remember these exact words exiting his mouth, "We can sit here for as long as you need in silence, or we can talk it out. Whatever you need and whenever you are ready." The talks were meanigful and not just something to make me laugh and move on. He helped me accept what was happening. A Person I've Loved A person that I have loved was the person I met the day I was born. The woman none other than my mother. She has been through everything with me and I have been through everything with her. She is a tough confident woman, but is never afraid to be vulnerable. I remember sitting with her one night crying and her words were, "I'll be fine, I promise." The fact that she wasn't afraid to cry with me around made me love her even more. I look up to her as a person and how hard she works. I love her with all of my heart and hope to be half the human being that she is someday. A Person I've Hurt I try to always be the light at the end of the tunnel; however, there have been some poeple I have hurt in the past. One specific example includes a friend that I just randomly stopped talking to. I gave him no explanation, one day we were talking and the next we weren't. Looking back I can see that I may not be so good at decision making. I wouldn't want someone to do that to me yet I did it to someone else. I have now realized that what I did could've been quite hurtful even though at the moment I could only think about the one tiny mistake he had made. A Person I Can't Live Without Without a doubt, I could never live without my father. He is someone who has loved me uncondtionally through everything. He makes sure that I am always having fun, but is also serious when it is needed. I believe though that being serious every so often is a good thing. If seriousness wasn't a factor in life, I would be worried for everyone's well-being. I can be quite the nervous girl; however, my dad always knows how to fix my worries. I remember this one conversation we had recently and he said, "Don't be so nervous all the time, just enjoy life." I can't live without him for the obvious reasons, yes but I also can't live without his presence with me all of the the time knowing what to do and say no matter what. A Person Who Has Struggled or Succeeded The person that most sticks out to me as someone successful is my cousin. He has been through some challenges including the loss of his father (my uncle), but her has perservered and pushed through every single one of them. The reason I believe he is successful is not just because of the challenges he struggled with but because of what he has accomplished. For instance, he is currently in college on a full-ride scholarship for academic and athletic reasons. If that doesn't scream success I don't know what does. I will never forget attending his last high school football game when he recieved the "MVP" award and thinking to myself, "You did it, you've accomplished so much, and don't ever stop going for what you want." Having him being so successful is extremely important to me because it inspires me to strive to one day be like him and succeed at anything and everything I want to. Ashleigh Collins
Due: 6 September 2022 Mitch Albom: The Five People You Meet in Heaven After reading Mitch Albom’s novel “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” it has become clear that there are many themes that arise throughout the story. For every person Eddie had met in Heaven there was a lesson that was taught. However, three that stuck out were forgiveness, acceptance, as well as the importance of love in a person’s life. Each one relays an important message or lesson to be learnt by the reader. The theme of forgiveness is brought up many times during the story. An example of this includes the Blue Man as he described that Eddie could have been the reason that he had died. Eddie had seemed completely shocked by the statement. That has been proven when the text stated, “ ‘LISTEN MISTER,’ EDDIE rasped, ‘I never killed you, OK? I don’t even know you.’ The tone of the Blue Man brought through during this scene was not at all angry. The Blue Man appeared at peace, calm, or perhaps forgiving. The text also mentioned, “The Blue Man sat on a bench. He smiled as if trying to put a guest at ease.” This is showing me that no matter what happens there is always room for a second chance, a chance to be forgiven. Although many other examples of forgiveness had been shown throughout the story, that was what almost popped off the paper and turned into real life. It caught my attention and taught me the lesson of forgiveness. Another theme is acceptance. Not only did Eddie have to accept the fact that he had just died but he had to also accept many other things he learned while in heaven. Eddie had met the Last Person in Heaven which was the little girl inside the fire he set. “His body convulsed and his head jerked wildly until the howling gave way to prayer like utterances, every word expelled in the breathless surge of confession: ‘I killed you, I KILLED YOU,’ then a whispered ‘forgive me,’ then ‘FORGIVE ME, OH GOD . . .’ and finally, ‘What have I done . . .WHAT HAVE I DONE? . . .’ ” He had come to his senses and accepted that his instincts were right. There was someone in that fire. He also now had to accept that he was in the midst of the child that he had killed. This scene in the novel taught me that no matter how bad a situation you will always have to come to some sort of acceptance. One final theme brought up throughout the story is the importance of love in a person’s life. Eddie had much love surrounding him in his precious life. It could have simply been the children that went to Ruby Pier, or his family, but especially his wife. Marguerite was his one true love in his life and he always valued this love. The author states, “And Eddie found a certain love with Marguerite, a graceful love, a deep but quiet love, one that he knew above all else was irreplaceable.” This is the perfect example of the importance of love in Eddie’s life. It proves to the reader that you can count on love when you need to. This can be love from absolutely anyone. After reading this novel, many would say that an endless amount of lessons have been learned. As previously mentioned, there were three that really stood out being forgiveness, acceptance, as well as the importance of love in a person’s life. The interpretation of each lesson can be different for every person, but it ultimately comes out to the same overall message. |
